Gale Force First

This is all new to me. I've read blogs and I've crafted the premise of several, but never before have I actually written one. So here goes-- my first ever blog post!

For such a momentous occasion, I've decided to go with this highly intriguing photo I found online amidst all the hurricane hoopla last week. It was taken in the wake of the 1938 New England hurricane which killed over 600 people and destroyed 57,000 homes-- including the one owned by this rotund couple. Besides its overwhelming awkwardness, there is so much to take from this photo. Where did the chairs come from? Whose idea was it to pose in such a way? Where is the rest of their home? What happened to these two after this shot? I'm drawn to photos (and writings) that both speak for themselves and beg a deeper explanation and this is certainly one of those.

  1. What an image. I hope the photographer wins an award for capturing the image, whether it was set up artistically or discovered journalisticly.

  2. I like this because the photo itself would make a good jumping-off point for a nonfiction project. Writing the narrative of that particular storm would be fascinating. And the multimedia possibilities—wow. We'll be talking about this very kind of thing in class.
