Article of Interest: "The Journalist's Guide to Twitter"

This guy clearly doesn't need a "Journalist's Guide" to anything: Source: bob520.wordpress.com

While searching out authors that are leveraging Twitter, Facebook and other social media to build an audience, I came across this article on www.Mashable.com: "The Journalist's Guide to Twitter." Leah Betancourt writes this practical piece laying out the ways in which Twitter and social media can actually aid in reporting in addition to building readership. Some interesting (and some obvious) points are made. Check it out!

  1. This is great -- good tips in there.

My only no-no with social media as a reporting tool: Never supplant Twitter/FB for good old-fashioned reporting. Only in extreme circumstances would I allow one of my writers to direct-Tweet a person, for instance, to ask for comment/contact, because it looks lazy. Even Jake Tapper does it and it drives me nuts. If we're good reporters (and Jake is an excellent reporter) we know how to find our sources off-site.
